My girlfriend foolishly bought a 1991 Volvo S40. It ran out of gas, and gas wasn't getting to the engine...?

seeing as it is fossil injected, I was told there may be an electrical problem, or something with the fuel pump. So, my dad came over tested the battery, energize plugs, fuses, distributor cap, etc, and everything was fine, and what wasn't was replaced. The engine attempted to start, but didn't get hold of. So, he came over today, and replaced the fuel pump relay, and the car started. I turned it off and started it again, and it started. So, I went in the accommodate to do something, and started it again, and it went back to attempting to start but didn't catch. I was told something may be shorting out the fuel increase relay. What do I do?

That doesn't explain the short in the fuel pump relay
Well, all I had to do was solely replace the fuse, and now the car is running fine. Thank you for your help though. I will be giving you best answer.
Well rebecca. This is after all I mentioned once upon a time. The fuel pump relay was changed, and the car started 2 times, and then didn't, then I changed the # 5 or 6 combine, and it's been running since.

Most credible , since the problem only came on after running out of fuel is that there is an obstruction on the fuel pick up pipe in the fuel tank or you have picked up some bull into the fuel filter.Clean the fuel filter and blow back down into the tank to see if everything is free there.--edit--you didn't refer to a short in the relay in your question.Only that your father replaced the fuel pump relay.How a fuel empty relay shorts after running out of fuel is beyond me.Unless it was shorted out (burned out) by somebody who wasn't guaranteed what he was doing as he was trying to start the car.Finally check that the fuel cut out switch in case of an accident hasn't been activated by false step because that supplies current to the fuel pump.
