1989 240 volvo car problem?>?
I run out of gas,Midas changed the both feed pumps and filter, and its getting pressure now ,,as it wasnt before.,but still keeps dyeing Does any one have any ideas? relay is ok They said ...Is there a another one?
if car will start and run but dies out intermittently guess a failing crank position sensor.
this car has on board diagnostics that do not require a scan tool to announce.
there is a socket box near the left front strut tower it has a short pig tail, a light emitting diode, and a spirit button.
for complete operating instructions you can check my previous answers or purchase either a haynes vade-mecum or the much more in depth robert bentley 240 service manual, this system is more than a code reader as it can test many functions.
for fundamental code reading ::
1 key on engine off
2 plug pig tail into socket #2 [fuel injection]
3 burden button down for 3 seconds and release
4 L.E.D will flash a 3 digit code [example system pass code will be flash...flicker...flash and read as 1 1 1 no faults]
note this system can store up to three codes at a time so if you have a first code other than 111 impel the button again and read second code then again or until first code repeats.
5 record all codes on paper as they flame.
6 now repeat the whole process for the ignition system by pluging pig tail into socke t#6 the same rules apply.
somecommon codes are:
excite injection
131 engine rpm signal missing [this can be caused by crank sensor or a bad power stage part [module]
121 fault in signal to/from air mass unit
123 fault in signal from coolant temp sensor
ignition system:
214 rush [crankshaft position] sensor signal faulty or missing.
it is generally accepted that if you have code 131 ammunition and code 214 ign. system.at the same time the crank position sensor [also known as a speed sensor] is impaired.
hope these tips help and if you get other than listed codes feel free to post them as there are several knowlageable people on this milieu that can further help you if needed
good luck
note 1 there is a fuse holder on the left fender verge on the battery that supplies power to the fuel and ignition systems this is prone to corrosion and if in poor behave better should be replace with a marine type sealed fuse holder this holder should be soldiered in [no crimp connections allowed] and the soldier joints are to be sealed with stress shrink tubing
note 2 a word on fuel pumps. i have found that aftermarket pumps are at best a crap-spring. bosch is the original supplier and only pumps from volvo or bosch aftermarket are acceptable. period.
