Sandy McDonnell dies; the Boy Scout who grew up to head McDonnell Douglas Corp.
The day in 1948 that Sandy McDonnell started work at the McDonnell Aircraft Co., his uncle and company founder, the legendary "Mr. Mac," suggested that his nephew start at the very bottom: as a janitor at 68 cents an hour.
Sandy had two college degrees and a pregnant wife and wasn't too thrilled with the offer. Mr. Mac finally agreed to start his new protégé as a trainee — at $1.26 an hour.
To no one's surprise, Sandy moved steadily up the ladder: stress engineer, group leader, assistant project manager and companywide project manager. By 1971, he was president of the merged McDonnell Douglas Corp., and the next year, chief executive officer.
