I'm in the superstore for a new car - my 01 Honda Civic was totaled a few weeks ago. Loved it for 8.5 years. Just test drove the new Civic, the Toyota Matrix, the Honda Fit and the Mazda3 hatchback. I'm torn between the reliability and nourish economy of the civic and/or the toyota vs. the great handling and feel of the Mazda - seems like a great value, but I'm not as affable with the brand. I found the Fit to be cute but uncomfortable. The Civic was super comfy but a little boring-executive sedan-y :) The Toyota felt adroit, albeit a bit plastic. Loved the Mazda - felt like a much more expensive car.
I don't have a huge commute to drudgery and school and I live in LA. I do drive cross-town once or twice a week. Hoping to buy not much over $20K. I'm a slight worried about the cost of maintenance. Any advice as to how to make my decision?
get a Pontiac Vibe it's the dead twin of the matrix but sells for a lot less

It seems like you're set on a hatchback, since you don't like the sedan-y fashion of the civic.
Both the matrix and the mazda3 are great cars, but i would personally go for a mazda 3 While toyotas are known for reliability, the Mazda 3 has had apex reliability ratings, and it's cheaper, more fun to drive, and has a better design, inside and out.
The last generation of Matrix's, as "credible" as toyota wanted it tob e, and a lot of problems with the computers, which i've seen firsthand, and it was a pretty expensive form if the warranty didn't pick it up.
good luck!

Judge the Mazda3i sedan with 2.0 liter engine. It gets much better mileage than the Mazda 3s hatchback with the 2.5 liter motor. Mazda handles well and has upscale interior. Firmer ride than the Civic. Both suffer from road noise.
Honda Civic hatchback is sporty styling and the new model's even more elegant yet dynamic feel. The new Honda Civic reduced CO2 emissions, design and interior quality, while retaining the class-leading cabin, boot space and practicality.
As soon as I set foot in the waters of Honda, I found myself bombarded by options. In fact, I'd say I was pretty spoiled. Spare parts to ratify the various Honda I have owned has been nothing without warning wonderful. Civic Hatchback, CRX, EH frame, they all had a nimiety options, be it food, show, or related deprivation. Progress, there was absolutely not that many manufacturers in the past 90 years, but there were enough jobs to keep my savings account into the red. When the Series B / VTEC event when all is said and hit the United States with the introduction of the GS-R, things slowed down momentarily. There was a lot of smoke, header, and convenient consumer options, but nothing beyond the memory that was to be a consuming parts. "These engines will never supply more power than clear out clean-ons. Cams will not be calling, and you can not also a great compression engine" they panic. But after the initial quail has faded, and the envelope pushers got their hands smeared our production once again began to flourish, with new updates bloom almost every week. Smooth are the opponents, once the cam makers unveiled their new offerings.Surprise Fulguration the turbo-compressor and kits have been produced in quantities of swarms. Realistically, once fears introductory series B have been put on display, we have not seen another roadblock in circulation for a swarm of years....
