Truck Makes Squeal When Started.?
My '88 Ford F150 is making a deafening squeal when it starts, and it doesn't stop sometimes until I start driving. It seems to be coming from the front part of the truck.
Any idea why?
Check the tension on the belts, if they are too tight (or released) they can squeal.
Try having the hood open and get someone else to start it whilst you stand close (not too close!) and pay attention to.
If it's not there then it may be the nose bearing at the front of the crankshaft, which is an engine out job....
replace your belt if it looks bad, but otherwise the squeal sounds like its from the bearings in a pulley.
if your truck is event properly, then it is only an annoyance that can be lived with ... it isn't damaging anything.
to look into what it is from. on the front of your engine you got that serpentine belt that runs some pulleys (if you have more than one cincture you may be able to disconnect one to narrow down which set is making noise)..... the pulleys have bearings on the inside, one of those pulleys is usual bad and the bearings are making noise. if it is still working, it will be good for a while, but it may fail eventually (and it will be easier to pinpoint which block!).
so if you can actually hear which one it is coming from, replace that part. otherwise, you can start replacing them if you like... or look for pulleys that aren't operating correctly to supplant them first.
you have an alternator pulley, it is kinda like your generator ... charging your battery as well as supplying power to the carrier. if your vehicle has a voltmeter it should be easier to tell if your alternator isnt working properly. as well you can take your car to autozone or your neighbourhood auto store and have them test your alternator (ive always done this by bringing them the alternator but i believe they can test it while in the vehicle...they should be masterful to at least, but they dun always know much at all).
theres an a/c compressor pulley, this hooks to your a/c liness ... and a lot of vehicles nowadays have a/c pulleys that don't for unless the a/c is actually turned on, although i am not sure about your vehicle. you could potentially look to see if anyone in your area gives casual a/c checks and ask them to check the pressure of your a/c system with the a/c switch on/off and see if it appears to be working. careful bout that tho, they may just lie to try and have you buy m. alternatively you could rent a/c pressure gauges from autozone and hook em up, google how to test your a/c.
theres a not function pump pulley, it pushes coolant around and such. if you are running hot and don't have any leaks, ensure your fan spins right/well, substitution your thermostat, then change the water pump. i say this as it is very important not to run hot. but this is just another pulley.
theres other pulleys as well, but i on these are most likely to be the culprit and would be the first things to check. (although ford has shitty power steering pulleys which make spread and go bad.......i cant always tell it is a ford when it starts up, but when i hear that noise i can always tell it is a ford without seeing it.)
google or get a book on your car, you can find what all your pulleys do and how to probe/check them (if possible).
otherwise, with a general issue like this, if there are no actual problems and you arent able to pinpoint the cry out... the best advice would be to either start replacing stuff till you get it right, or just trip it out until something actually fails and you know what it is.
mechanic work is a lot like medicine in the respect that it is trial and slip-up, if you can't duplicate the issue or pinpoint it all you are doing is guessing. no mechanic can tell you 'for sure' what your issue is. if it in truth does fail and causes you problems, it would be much easier to locate the issue.
P.S.
as for belt 'tightness' .... if the perimeter doesn't fly off it is ok. belts can wobble while running, and they are supposed to be tight. you get a new belt and put it on, you have to pull the tension block as far as it goes, and the belt will slip on w/ minimal room to spare.
it can appear to wobble a couple few inches and be ok.
the weighty aspects of the belt you would look at would be the same as for your rubber hoses .... cracks, holes / chips / pocks, warping and etc ... on the underside of the band, with those lines / grooves, those shouldn't be all messed up or it'd need to be replaced as well. but, a squeal from your pulleys?? this isnt your sash.
if your belt is messed up, replace it. but listen for changes in the squeal, and keep an eye on how long your next belt takes to get messed up.
if your across is the wrong size, too loose/tight, it'll be thrown and chewed up to bits. but if you replace it anyway, what the hell fair? should be less than $15. i'd rather save that money myself tho

Aftermarket products, OEM parts and replacement parts - every site that has any information at all about auto parts uses these terms. This may be confusing if you don't know what they mean.
Online auto parts stores have their own specialized language when it comes to the products that they sell, such as aftermarket parts, replacement parts and OEM parts. What does this mean?
