It's called the 320d SE Thrifty Dynamics and does 68.9mpg (combined), has 163hp and 265lb/ft torque. 0-62mph takes 8.2secs. Honestly Impressive I think.

If you're in the USA or anywhere else not in Europe, do you think this car would sell where you are? Would you buy one if you were looking for a bmw 3 series or comparable? Yes - maybe they would have to make a few modifications for US regulations, but just assume that could be easily done. And it's only available as a manual... although BMW do have an 8 assist auto coming soon that works with stop start technology.

I think it's really impressive how much they have improved both power and fuel economy over the last decade. 9 years ago the 320d only managed 136bhp and 49.6mpg, so they've gained 25bhp and almost 20mpg, as well as the car being a little bigger.

The cavalcade I read was full of praise - so I don't see why it shouldn't appeal to buyers. We are all going to have to be more energy conscious and this is a step in the licence direction.

And they dont shop the 1 series hatchback at all, when its cheaper and more practical than the coupe.
I would have thought even in the US there'd be plenty of people wanting a cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, more environmentally amiable BMW.

1. The EU has crash standards, emissions regulations etc too, they're not that different.
2. When i said cheaper i didnt mean that much cheaper, a 320d would be possibly $6000 less than a 328i Or a 1 series 3dr hatch $1500 less than a coupe.
3. "The typical BMW buyer is not driven by low tournament costs. They are buying performance, style, image and technology." I beg to differ, here the 3 series is a very popular companionship car, particularly the 320d, they do high mileages so fuel economy is important, which also affects their company car tax impediment. The 320d is by far the most popular BMW.
4. Compared to hybrids, diesels are cheaper to buy and do more mpg in the real world. Maintenance costs depart depending on the car but I think they're pretty comparable to gas powered cars.

I want a car that is at best a coupe because i dont need a big car as i dont have a family, but i dont want a tiny two seater either. I would like it to be modish but also comfortable for cruising around town and also good looking and with a quality feel to it. For example, a BMW 3 Series 2007/6. I recognize this is a picky list but i would like other people to suggest cars as i need to look at other cars i peradventure missing. Thank you :)
