Why have we gotten worse at making automobiles?
My 1964 Cadillac Coupe Deville is superior to anything on the road in styling, comfort, leg room, roominess, durability, reliability, etc. The only flaw it has is its mpg. Nowadays cars all look alike, drive alike, aren't durable, reliable, and will most likely be in a junkyard in 10 years. What has happened to our auto industry? Why doesn't everyone just buy a classic/antique car? They're superior to today's automobiles! Bucket Seats are awful. Real cars have Bench Seats!

1. todays cars have fewer problems than anything on the market... ever.
2. todays cars last longer based on mileage than any cars, ever. today the AVERAGE car is about 160k. in 1965 the nhtsa figures the average was about 85k... aw the good ole days.
3. todays cars average about 2.5x as good of fuel economy.
4. bench seats were horribly uncomfortable and didn't allow you to control the car.
5. todays cars are faster straight line than ever before.
6. todays cars handle better and stop faster than ever before.
7. todays cars are safer than ever before with, inspite of higher speeds and more cars on the road, fewer accidents per capita than ever before.
other than that, old cars were better. as long as you like underpowered, uncomfortable, bad handling, unreliable cars.

Everyone can't "just buy a classic/antique car" because, as the price often indicates, classic and antique cars are in a very limited supply vs. the number of vehicles on the road. As far as comfort and leg room, I'll have to admit that some of those old land yachts were some nice cruising beasts - especially on a long trip.
Today's cars tend to look alike because they all have to meet the same restrictions and mandates - years ago, all the engineers had to do was design an appealing and fancy set of wheels - safety and efficiency was on the back burner.
Reliability? I have to go with the newer vehicles - they're generally much more reliable than the older ones. I remember routine valve jobs at 40 or 50,000 miles, grease and oil changes at 3000 miles, new tires at 15 or 20,000 miles, carburetor adjustments and repairs every 6 months or so.
The older cars were high maintenance vehicles - the newer ones, for the most part, are much more forgiving for lack of maintenance.
All in all, the manufacturers have gotten far better at producing good, safe, reliable and efficient vehicles - they just don't have the appeal of the old classics, not by a long shot.
