One of the features of the revised (and now 110-strong) Audi A4 range which went on sale in the UK a couple of months ago is a new 134bhp version of the two-litre turbo diesel engine. Assuming a saloon rather than estate body style, this engine gives the A4 official fuel economy of 65.7mpg on the combined EU cycle, along with a CO2 rating of just 112g/km.

It's not that long since 112g/km would have seemed an unachievable figure for a car of this size, and as is becoming increasingly obvious the tax system hasn't kept up with technology. Notional CO2 emissions of this level mean that the Exchequer will require you to pay just £30 in Vehicle Excise Duty from year two of the car's existence onwards; that was surely never in the script for a large family car, and it's not going to last for ever, so enjoy it while you can.
